Edinburgh’s’ Newest B Corp? It’s an IT Company

Wednesday 13th August 2025

EDINBURGH, 4 August 2025 – Edinburgh-based tech firm Illuminate IT has officially been certified as a B Corporation, joining a growing but exclusive group of companies committed to using business as a force for good. In doing so, the company becomes one of fewer than five IT businesses in Scotland – and among just a handful across the UK – to achieve this gold standard in social and environmental impact.

The prestigious B Corp certification, awarded by B Lab, is globally recognised and requires businesses to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

While Scotland is home to over 70 certified B Corps across a range of industries, very few operate in the IT and technology space. Illuminate’s certification shines a spotlight on a sector often criticised for prioritising speed and scale over sustainability and ethics.

“Illuminate was born using BCorp principals, our fantastic team carry out the vision and ethos every single day.  We are proud to be part of such an important movement and encourage everyone to run a business for good”  Amanda Stewart CTO

Why It Matters
IT providers are often in the spotlight only when something goes wrong – a cyberattack, or a system crash that brings operations to a halt. For many businesses, the relationship with their IT partner is reactive, rooted in fixing problems rather than building trust. Illuminate’s B Corp certification flips that script. It shows that tech support doesn’t have to be transactional or crisis-led, it can be ethical, strategic, proactive, and grounded in doing what’s right for your digital transformation. In an industry known more for outages than impact, Illuminate IT is proving that you can be an IT partner with integrity, putting people, purpose, and progress at the core of the service.

How Illuminate IT Will Put Purpose Into Practice

Working with partners such as The Edinburgh Remakery to allow us to provide cradle to grave service for our customers alongside fostering a workplace where wellbeing and inclusion thrive

For Illuminate IT, B Corp certification reinforces a way of working already deeply embedded in the company’s culture. As a people-first tech firm, the team has long prioritised ethical innovation, transparency, and sustainable growth. This next chapter sees those principles formalised and strengthened.

Key areas of impact include:

  • Responsible sourcing and procurement – Choosing hardware, software, and partners that meet ethical and environmental standards.
  • Inclusive hiring and development – Expanding access to tech careers through outreach, mentoring, and skills-building programmes.
  • Sustainable operations – Operating with a remote-first model, reducing carbon impact, and partnering with green energy providers.
  • People-First Culture – offering fertility-friendly and menopause-aware education, flexible working arrangements, robust mental health support, and active mentorship to empower women in tech and drive systemic change across the industry.

The company will be independently reassessed every three years to ensure ongoing compliance and progress.

What It Means for Clients and Partners

For Illuminate’s customers, B Corp status means working with a team that puts values into action. From robust data privacy to greener IT infrastructures and fairer working practices, clients can expect measurable, purpose-led impact baked into every project.

“Doing business with us means doing business for good,” said Amanda CTO of Illuminate IT “We’re here to prove that you don’t have to choose between performance and principles.”
