Bank of England decision makers visit Midlothian

Business people in Midlothian and East Lothian will have a rare opportunity to hear a key insider’s views of the UK economy when the newest member of the Bank of England’s influential Monetary Policy Committee addresses members of the Chamber of Commerce.

American Dr Adam Posen, a former economist at the US Federal Reserve, will be the guest speaker at a lunch at Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg, on Wednesday 21 October organised by Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce.

The Monetary Policy Committee comprises the Governor of the Bank of England, the two deputy Governors, two members of the Bank with responsibility for monetary policy and market operations, and four outside members with relevant expertise appointed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

A fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, Dr Posen is also a Member of the Board of the Brussels European Global Economic Laboratory (BRUEGEL), a European think tank working in the field of international economics. He has co-written a book on inflation with Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

“The work of the Monetary Policy Committee, which sets UK interest rates, is of fundamental importance to the national economy,” said Chamber of Commerce Manager Laura Socha. “This event will allow members and their guests to hear at first hand the thoughts of a vastly experienced economist who is at the heart of the debate on how the UK should pull itself out of recession.”

The lunch will also be attended by members of the Borders and West Lothian Chambers of Commerce. The cost is £10 for members who book on-line (at or £15 otherwise, and £20 for non-members.
